What is a Phin?

A phin is a traditional coffee filter used to make Vietnamese coffee. The most common use is for making a single cup serving of coffee. It consists of 4 parts:

How does it work?

It works similar to an espresso portafilter, except the water is passed through by gravity instead of pressure.

Assemble phin with chamber on top of lid, and pour hot water through phin. This makes the coffee grounds expand to fill the holes.

To brew, simply tamp coffee in the chamber, and leave tamper in the chamber. Pour water into the chamber. Put lid on top and wait for coffee to drip through. If you’d like to add condensed milk, you can add it to the cup before brewing.
